Czech Republic: Best Things to Do in Prague, 2024

Updated: Nov 25, 2024

After visiting earlier this month, I can confirm that Prague is, in fact, one of the best places to visit this time of year. With a crisp chill in the air and the fairy-tale streets, Prague is undoubtedly an unforgettable destination. It's magical, and although busy, there are plenty of hidden gems that offer a little respite from the crowds.

Here’s my guide to making the most of Prague during the winter months:

Prague Castle

Prague Castle

You'd be mistaken if you thought that I, as a typical Brit, wouldn't be visiting the most famous sights of Prague. No, I started my adventure at Prague Castle, and it certainly didn't disappoint. With impressive grounds and beautiful architecture, complete with the St. Vitus Cathedral, it’s a tourist hotspot with good reason. I also didn’t bother with a guided tour, and honestly, felt like I could explore at my own pace without missing anything important!

This stroll was a must. Even with the crowds, it felt like visiting a different time entirely. If you can, get there early in the morning or late in the evening to enjoy it in relative quiet and try to avoid the hustle and bustle.

Dancing House

One of my favourite modern sights was the Dancing House. It’s a striking contrast to Prague’s Gothic and Baroque architecture, and it somehow fits perfectly into the city’s eclectic vibe. A quick detour then led me to the Franz Kafka Statue, a quirky nod to the literary legend that adds character to the urban landscape.

For book lovers like myself, Prague offers treasures like the Baroque Library and Strahov Library. Both are as grand as you’d imagine, with endless rows of beautifully bound volumes. Be prepared for long queues at the National Library/Column of Books, though—waiting over an hour for just a minute inside is a common experience.

Foodie Highlights

If there’s one thing I recommend, it’s planning your meals ahead of time. Prague’s restaurants fill up quickly, especially in the evenings, and you don’t want to be wandering the streets looking for somewhere that isn’t fully booked (trust me, I learned the hard way).

For brunch, The Bagel Lounge was my top pick. Their fresh, filling bagels were a lifesaver after all that walking. The Spot was another cosy gem, perfect for a leisurely start to the day, while Fly Vista offered a meal with a view.

Dinner calls for a mix of good food and atmosphere, and Sad Man’s Tongue Bar & Bistro hit the mark with its lively vibe. As for dessert, I couldn’t resist the chimney cakea doughy cone filled with ice cream. Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s also delicious.

Must-See Attractions Off the Beaten Path

For a quieter experience, head to Petřín Tower. It’s Prague’s mini version of the Eiffel Tower, and the views from the top are stunning. Combine it with a visit to the Mirror Maze for a fun, bank-friendly experience.

Another highlight was the Czech Lookout, offering the best views of the city. It’s slightly off the beaten path, but the effort is more than worth it. For something completely unique, I visited Svet Meduz, a jellyfish museum that was small but utterly charming.

And for those with a sweet tooth, Candy Miners stood out among the many candy stores in Prague. Be careful though! A lot of them are tourist traps.

Tips for a Smooth Trip

Souvenirs: Souvenir shops are everywhere, but most sell the same generic trinkets. I recommend “Souvenir with a Story” for something a bit more unique.

Tickets: Book tickets online for major attractions, but for places like Petřín Tower, buying on-site is often cheaper.

Photo Booth Fun: Map “Foto Automat” for an old-school photo booth experience in the city centre.

Why Visit Prague in Winter?

There’s something about Prague in the colder months. The crisp air, the city lights as night falls, and the mix of history and culture create an atmosphere that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re exploring famous landmarks or discovering hidden gems, Prague is a city that captures your heart.

So, pack those walking boots, book your restaurants in advance, and get ready for an adventure you won’t forget. Prague in winter is a dream—one that you’ll want to relive again and again.
