Spiritfarer: A Review
If you're like me and you call yourself a gamer, when actually you recycle the same three games every year, then Spiritfarer should be your next play. This indie gem by Thunder Lotus Games masterfully combines genres, blending management, exploration, and storytelling in a way that fully immerses you into Stella’s journey. After playing it on Xbox, I can confidently say this: Spiritfarer is a masterpiece that earns every one of its five stars.
A Journey Through Stories and Souls
In Spiritfarer, you step into the shoes of Stella, a ferry master to the deceased. You find yourself sailing gently across the sea with your furry companion Daffodil, as you navigate a stunning world, meeting spirits, learning their stories, and helping them find peace. These spirits, each different in personality and deeply moving, leave behind not just memories with Stella but spirit flowers—glowing, personal reminders of their presence and the bonds developed.
The emotional depth of these interactions sets Spiritfarer apart from other games, as each storyline is built to portray a life. One thing that certainly helped me navigate these journeys was reading through resources like the Spiritfarer wiki, which provides insight and steps into aspects of the game like cooking and crafting.
Spiritfarer Core: Building, Crafting, and Cooking
At its heart, Spiritfarer works well as a “cosy management game,” but also implements tasks like cooking really well; which is important if you find certain management tasks such as crafting to be tedious. From farming and cooking to building structures buildings like the Spiritfarer windmill, the gameplay manages to perfectly balance productivity and relaxation. Preparing dishes like noodle soup in Spiritfarer ensures you can satisfy spirits and provide them with their favourite meal; which will also earn you game trophies!
Progression feels natural, with each upgrade or crafted resource a gentle challenge, (like the elusive pulsar ingot), allowing you to unlock new opportunities in order to connect with the spirits and expand your floating world.
A Personal Connection
For me, Spiritfarer is defined by its characters that final moment of guiding the spirits to the Everdoor. The soundtrack is stunning and only amplifies the emotional resonance. Each spirit, from the prickly Elena to the jolly little Atul, brings something unique to Stella’s journey.
You know a game is great when you find yourself thinking about it and wanting to replay it over and over.
What was your favorite part of Spiritfarer? Who was your favourite character? Mine were most definitely Alice and Gwen.
Go and play it!
